Fence work in Seguin, the Guadalupe County seat

Seguin is the largest town and the county seat of Guadalupe County, on Interstate 10 and U.S. 90 (Handbook of Texas). Schertz is about 19 miles west of Seguin (Handbook of Texas, Schertz). This page covers what is specific to a Seguin address. For the general process, start with fence installation and come back.

Seguin has its own permit office

A Seguin lot is governed by the City of Seguin, not the City of New Braunfels. The City’s Permits and Inspections page says an application must be made to the Building Official to install a fence, and that the contractor submits it. The same page lists “fences under seven (7) feet” among its no-permit items, so the page reads two ways. We cannot tell you which reading controls your project. The page gives the Permits Department number as 830-401-2435; call it with your fence height and ask before work starts.

Other points from that page worth knowing:

Height and material rules in Seguin’s zoning code

A copy of Seguin’s zoning chapter published by a third-party code site (Zoneomics copy of Seguin zoning, Chapter 5) shows these fence standards. It is not the City’s own site, so check the current text on the City’s Municode code of ordinances before you rely on it.

ItemWhat the copy says
Front yardNo fence over four feet, measured from adjacent natural grade (Sec. 5.7.5.E).
Side and rear, interior lotsNo fence over six feet (Sec. 5.7.5.F).
Street cornersNo opaque fence within six lineal feet of the legal street corner where it blocks a driver’s view of the intersecting street (Sec. 5.7.5.A).
Allowed materialsTreated wood, wrought iron, stone or brick with mortar, painted or textured masonry, plus cedar, vinyl, chain link and decorative metal (Sec. 5.7.4.A).
Prohibited materialsSheet metal, barbed wire and razor ribbon, plywood, corrugated steel, fiberglass panels and electric fences, with exceptions for agricultural and certain industrial sites (Sec. 5.7.4.B and C).

Compare that six-foot limit with New Braunfels, where the only text we could read is a draft ordinance that proposes eight feet (see the installation page). A homeowner who moves between the two towns should not assume the same height works in both.

What the ground and weather are like

The Handbook of Texas describes Guadalupe County as flat to rolling land. Soils are dark, calcareous clay in the northwest and fine sandy loam in the southeast, and annual rainfall averages 33 inches (Handbook of Texas). Clay soils are a reason to ask any installer how deep the posts go and whether concrete is used on every post. Soils change across a large county, so give the pro your ZIP code.

Before the first hole

Texas law calls for a request to Texas811 at least two business days before digging, and the service is free. If a company builds your fence, ask them for the ticket number. Seguin neighborhoods with HOAs add another layer: Texas Property Code § 202.023 lets many associations regulate fence type while limiting how far they can go (statute).

Which fence for a Seguin yard

Most requests we see described for this area fall into a few groups. A wood privacy fence fits the six-foot side and rear limit, a cedar fence trades higher cost for longer expected life, and a gate should be framed for the opening you actually use. If the fence is already standing, repair may cost less than starting over. The cost guide explains how to compare written bids.
